Tony Rook discovered this. A master at the nearby, excellent, Sherrardswood Prep and Senior School, he found remains in the field nearby and after archaeological work the baths were uncovered.
Excellent local heritage site with some activities for children to spend up to 45 minutes generally.
Fascinating place to visit and, for a small museum, there is plenty to see. The floor plan of the baths is pretty complete so it's easy to see how the baths were used and heated. Really interesting info boards and artefacts to see as well. Would definitely recommend a visit.
For a site 9m under the motorway it has very good disabled access. Need to take your own refreshments. But a very well preserved Roman bath. Toilets are available
Visited on Sunday to see what the Roman’s had been up to in Welwyn.
Opening hours seem to be largely weekends and bank holidays between 2 and 5pm with more availability during school holidays.
Admission is £3.50 for adults and free for children.
Rest assured children will not find this place dull. There was plenty to keep them active and engaged in fun history related activities outside and in. Some of which we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
There is a large open area outside the museum entrance where various displays and activities had been setup with plenty of room to sit and take in the sunshine as the children hunt for Roman coins!
As you descend some 9m underground into the museum the air cools and the suspense builds.
The Roman Baths are quite fascinating to see as you walk around them. The walls covered in photos and more interactive puzzles to keep you and the children busy. Watch out for the skeleton!
What we didn’t expect was to hear from Tony Rook in person, how he discovered and managed to preserve the site from being buried under the A1. Now in his 86th year you had to admire his passion and dedication.
As we finished our exploration of the baths, heading back to the car, we were left feeling what a great little find and what a fun afternoon out.

Welwyn Roman Baths. Admission Charge. Tunnel through time to the world of the Romans with a visit to Welwyn Roman Baths. You can't take a hot bath anymore; the boiler went out about 1,800 years ago when the Romans left! But you can see some fascinating remains.
Discover the secrets of the past in a steel vault hidden under the A1 motorway. The last bathwater drained away 2000 years ago but you can see how the Romans took a bath in this unique site.
About the Welwyn Roman baths: Most archaeological finds happen by accident, usually as the result of a construction project. So was the case with the Welwyn Roman baths. While the baths were being excavated, it became apparent that that the A1 - then under constructon - was going to run right through the site.
