York bookbinding has totally reinvigorated my little embroidery book. When I sent the book to them the boards had fallen off and the pages had become loose making it very hard to read without causing further damage.
I just got it back today and I am overwhelmed by how good a job they have done on it. I was a bit worried as the spine needed to be replaced but they have made a beautiful job of mimicking the original. The best thing is I can now read it.
I definitely would recommend York Bookbinding as the service, communication and work is exceptional.
A very tasteful, sensible and appropriate re-casing of a 19th century volume. Excellent service from a very courteous craftsman.
Family bible 1854 state of disrepair Cleaned new spine and rebound will definitely use York Bookbinding whenever I need to.
Beautiful work, excellent communication, quick turnaround. Really happy with the repaired book.
When a distant family member died, my grandma came into possession of her family's bible. Her grandparents bought it, her parents' names were in it and it had gone down her aunt's side until her line ended. There was a lot of emotion tied to the bible even though it was in a state of disrepair, She always wanted it restored, having told me so when she proudly showed it to me (the only grandchild that was interested in a tattered old dusty book).
When my grandma died, the book was earmarked for me. It had become even older, even more tattered, even dustier..and had been living in the top of a wardrobe for years in a Morrison's carrier bag being used as makeshift protection.
That is to say, it was a mess when Phil and his assistant got hold of it after we struggled to find a bookbinder with trustworthy credentials
Arriving at the workshop, we had a long and interesting chat about the story of the book, what he recommended doing to restore it and different options for extremely torn and manhandled pages.
We had no idea what the cost was going to be so we did some general research and were grateful that Phil came well under that estimate for a price we thought was fair and, in a way, a bit of a relief that we wouldn't be priced out of restoration.
This allowed us to also hand over an old copy of Dicken's Christmas Carol that was an heirloom of my wife, her mother and originating at her granny. Something she can't wait to show her family now that it is safe to hold in your hands again.
So in short, the restoration was done professionally, beautifully, at a good price and means a lot to us. Thanks, Phil and co.
p.s~ I hadn't realised but in the picture of the bible, there are some discovered photos of my grandma acting like a numpty which was an unexpected surprise to come with the bible.
