I'm a home-gamer / hobbiest who sometimes needs metals for projects. I've been able to get what I need from them so far. This is not a retail business. Don't expect to be walking into the Big Box Depot, grabbing a cart, and perusing the shelves. Email them and tell them what you need and they'll respond pretty quickly. If you like what they tell you then they'll get it ready for you to pick up. Easy peasy.
I am a low volume steel consumer. I have purchased various types of steel and have also had them do some precision cutting on their water jet. I have always had good service, reasonable prices, and good support from MLS Metals. They deliver what they promise when they promise it. Can’t ask for more than that.
After my extremely positive experience, I want to share what I learned to help others to understand what this place does and does not provide.
Please understand folks, they provide materials and cutting services for some of the said materials. However, that does not mean they can give you engineering advice or guidance on the use of the materials. They provide raw materials, cutting services, and other related offerings; but they do not have the engineering staff available to answer design or product usage questions.
This is like buying tools from (please forgive the example) Wal-Mart. A sales associate (or stocker) can probably point in the direction of what you are looking for. Sometimes, they might even have a little additional information or tips that help you make a purchase. Unfortunately, that is the exception and not the rule. This place provides materials; however, they are just the storefront. They can't give advice on how to use the materials. Therefore, for your safety and their integrity, they will refer you to an outside source if they cannot answer your question safely and with the knowledge you deserve.
You can provide design files such as DXF's or PDF's and have custom cuts made. If you know what you need, they can tell you their capabilities. I hope this helps anyone in need. They are good folks. I will be swinging a lot of business their way.
Response to Mr. Goldsmith.B
I realize it has been a while since this occurred but I do remember this phone call distinctly. While you feel that my direction to the internet was poor treatment we are not a structural engineering firm, nor do we have an engineer on staff. If LMS were to give advice on a beam and whether or not it would work in an application and it did not work we would be liable for that incorrect advice, hence the redirection to the internet for load tables for structural beams. Very few steel sellers have engineers on staff and will similarly redirect to the internet or suggestions of contacting an engineering firm. If you hadn't hung on me mid-sentence I would have explained all of this to you. What you consider simple questions are not simply answered.
