We enjoyed a free, knowledgeable, and informative tour of this new museum. We came away with a good understanding of Chandler history. The exhibit on the internment of Japanese American citizens during WWII is well-done and worth exploring. We also enjoyed the artworks derived from ordinary objects.
It's a small museum that took me a little under an hour to explore. After you walk past the nicely decorated roof that shades the entrance to the museum, you walk towards your right and that's where the exhibits are. The first room was about the Japanese Internment camps in AZ and there were a list of names along with origami cranes to represent those interned. There were also a few artifacts from those camps. After that, there was a coloring area, and beyond that, there were some paintings and items (like space heaters, telephone, etc) from the 1900s. Once done with this area, you can exit into the main hall to look at some pictures placed on the walls from Chandler in the past. After that, you can exit a door their Living Room building. The Living Room is a tiny room with two sofas, old silverware and dishes from the 1900s and pictures of a historic hotel.
There wasn't too much to see, but the museum is so well maintained- clean, aesthetically pleasing, and all the displays have helpful signs if you want to learn about them. The front desk ladies were especially kind and welcoming, and also informed me of the tours that they offered there.
The lady at the front desk is very nice and remembered me when I came back with my husband a couple weeks after my first visit. The exhibits are interesting and we look forward to seeing the exhibits in the future. Definitely somewhere we will go often!
We came to the museum to see their exhibit on the Gila River Interment Camp during WWII. My mother in law and her extended family were interned at that camp when she was a child, so the visit was very personal to our family. We attended the exhibit opening at an evening reception and everyone was so kind and was interested in our family's tragic stories and experiences at the camp. The exhibit was great for its size and we loved making paper cranes with the other attendees - it was a wonderful interactive project. The museum has a paper crane community project where they are trying to fold 16,655 paper cranes - one for every person interned at the Gila River Internment Camp.
