(October 5, 2019, 5:08 pm)I got the chocolate cake milkshake and apparently they literally just throw a cake in a blender with the milkshake. It's pretty good, not gonna lie, but also half way trough I was like, what am I drinking? No shade to the place though. Portillos is great. The ambience is really sick and the food is good.
(August 31, 2019, 2:50 am)In fairness, I've only ever had the Italian beef sandwich, so I guess I cannot say how good everything on the menu is, but I can comfortably say that the Italian beef sandwich is one of the most delicious things I've EVER eaten. I always have it with hot and sweet peppers, I've had it "dry" with extra gravy for dipping, and I've had it "dipped" or "wet". It is absolutely superb no matter what.
Is the staff always friendly and smiling? No. Usually relatively pleasant, but not always to be honest. When they first opened this location the service was exemplary, but I'll admit it has slipped.
I've heard some say, "This is not as good as in Chicago". That is complete nonsense. I've had the pleasure of enjoying the food at Portillo's in Chicago at a few locations, and they are all the same.
Honestly, if you've never had an Italian beef sandwich, you owe it to yourself to come here to experience it. If you THINK you've had an Italian beef sandwich but it wasn't from Portillo's, you are sadly mistaken and you owe it to yourself to try the real thing. If you're a vegetarian, why are you reading this?? Obviously you regret your decision and you also owe it to yourself to get back in the game with a Portillo's Italian beef sandwich.
I'm not saying it will change your life, but... wait, yeah, I guess I am saying it! Portillo's Italian beef sandwich WILL change your life!!
(August 13, 2019, 3:56 am)Walking into Portillo's is a refreshing experience. The open diner speckled with neon signs and big windows into the kitchen creates a laid-back atmosphere. We ordered the Maxwell Street Polish Sausage and the Big Beef sandwich. The hot dog was absolutely perfect, with the signature sausage snap and juicy flavor. The Big Beef was okay, although very dry; I ordered it "dry" (no gravy), which is probably the cause. I would order sandwiches with lots of gravy next time. Portillo's has the best dogs in Tempe and a decent sandwich menu to back up the charge.
