About a 30 minute drive from the main city and well worth it! Man at the front desk was inviting and friendly with great info about the Reserve. The Visitors center includes a beautiful desert garden and bird watching area.
Despite what other reviews say, this is a great place to bring kids and show them + teach them about desert wildlife. The Hassayampa was flowing and beautiful, I did not hike the Lake loop, instead op'd for the lookout and was not disappointed! Beautiful views, VERY shaded. If you're looking for a feeling of isolation without hiking or driving too far, this is PERFECT. Level trails throughout, with the exception of the ascending lookout trail. Check hours as they fluctuate and keep in mind children are free, adults are $5/per and dogs are NOT allowed! Happy hiking ♥
This place is insanely beautiful - so lush and full of life. The $5 admission is well worth it. Unfortunately part of the palm lake loop is currently closed due to a large fallen tree on the path but there is a pretty large network of trails to keep you busy and exploring. Even though it was humid and the end of July during my visit, I didn't have an issue with bug bites and I didn't come across any snakes, so do not let that deter you during the hotter months.
The restrooms near the parking lot were very clean. All of the workers were very nice and informative about the place. All in all a highly recommended location!
Lots of trails for walking with benches strategically placed should you need a break. I spent several hours birding around the ponds. Staff at the visitor center are friendly and helpful. Restrooms near the parking lot were clean and fresh. Butterfly gardens and hummingbird feeders bring nature close. Don't forget to check out the exhibits inside the visitor center. The reserve is truly a gem!
What a gift that this Preserve exists! Trails were well marked and the path around the lake was very easy to walk. For an additional challenge, try out the lookout. Very nice description of mountains on the horizon. The interpretive center had lovely descriptions of birds and other critters. Local poetry and natural habitat. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and would 100% recommend it.
