Sabino Recovery

This was my third treatment center--and it was the only one that worked.

There's not really any magic, they were just the first place that didn't lie to me. When they say all of the 12-step stuff is optional, they mean it. Trauma-informed care, with therapists and psychiatric PAs that actually listen and are up to date on modern treatments, was all that I needed.

The food and facilities were top notch, and the rules around what you could do during your own free time made us feel like the adults we were.

Most treatment centers are scams that should be burnt to the ground--they do stuff like hide technology "privileges" behind a paywall and call it "executive treatment" and push heavy duty SSRIs and anti-psychotics that make you fat. Look up what "Iatropic" means and beware! As a society, we haven't progressed much from One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, which was written in the 50s. That all said, this place is one of the few bright spot where we, in fact, have gotten a little better.

It's been two years, and I haven't even been tempted to drink or do anything that would lead to drinking.

Unfortunately this place is expensive, so not everyone reading this review will be able to afford it. To those folks who may be forced into a 12-step boot camp by moralistic spouses and family members: Don't let them take your humanity. You are not crazy! The pursuit of happiness is still a worthy pursuit. You just need to learn a more skillful approach. The game is rigged, but you can still beat it.

Sabino Recovery is hands down the best trauma treatment available. Every single staff member is kind, compassionate, knowledgeable and available. The smaller community allows for real individualized care. Sabino offers amazing, cutting edge integrative therapies that truly transform the body out of the trauma response and into recovery. There were 15 integrative experiences during my stay and each and everyone helped to heal my body and mind. The campus itself is immaculate and provides a sense of serenity with gorgeous mountain views, close access to hiking trails, a variety of wildlife, and newly renovated pickle ball and tennis courts. I would highly recommend this treatment program for anyone who is struggling mental health. They are knowledgable with all levels of mental health from depression/anxiety to substance/ alcohol abuse, to PTSD, eating disorders, co-dependency, and everything/anything in between. As a clinician myself, it is hard to admit needing help, and Sabino always treated me with dignity and respect. Even therapists experience trauma, and sometimes, we too need a little love and support. Sabino transformed my life. I will forever and always be grateful. ❤️‍🩹

My life was transformed during my 3 month stay at Sabino Recovery. I had a difficult time as a child. I thought many years ago I had taken care of the events that happened to me growing up and I didn’t think about them as I had buried them deep down inside of me. I thought they were gone and I just had addiction issues that I was unable to control. Little did I know there was a reason why I numbed myself, that there was a connection between my addiction and my trauma. I had no idea I had trauma, I knew that my upbringing was hard but not that it was there affecting me like some invisible ailment. At Sabino I learned a great deal about myself through a very caring team of therapy specialists. In addition to my addiction and trauma I learned that I coped with stress and things that overwhelmed me by shutting down and walking away. At 51 I have spent the majority of my life letting these negative coping skills control my me. I learned at Sabino how to recognize what’s happening and why. To listen to my body, feel my feelings and work with them instead of shutting completely down. Trust me bad days there as anyone would or will but it’s a wonderfully caring, safe place for that to happen. In a nutshell I started tearing down the walls of my trauma at Sabino. I have continued the work I started there over a year later. Everyday I use something I learned there. Sabino taught me the tools to actually live my life instead of exist the only way I knew how. I think the thing that surprised me the most during my time there is I learned that I could forgive the people that were suppose to protect and take care of me. This was shocking to me but very important as I learned. The burden of anger and resentment I carried most of my life was ok to let go of. This more than anything changed the coarse of my ability to love myself and be happy. I am thriving and enjoying my life today because of the work I have done through the guidance of Sabino Recovery. I can’t say enough about Sabino. To put it simply, they saved my life and am forever grateful.
