We had a wedding here over the weekend and it was beautiful. There were several spaces for our group close by but yet allowed some space for privacy. It looked like a few more spots were open beyond ours and the weekend was predicted to be beautiful, and it was! So there were plenty of people there.
The road in made me a bit nervous in my little Toyota Motorhome but it was doable with slower speeds. There were bigger units out there I'm just not real experienced in the beauty of true boondocking.
Remember to carry a fork with you, it will make removing those pesky Cholla easier and needle nose pliers to remove the leftover needles, seriously. Also watch your dogs/pets as those Cholla will snag them in a blink and then they will try to pull it out and now have it in their mouths. Yep had that happen this weekend so pet friendly is yes and no, because the outdoors bites back,😅.
There are ZERO amenities so be prepared and please pack out your trash and leave your spot cleaner than when you arrived, because these are beautiful grounds to camp.
Could this area be from a foreign planet?
This camp spot has NO amenities. The sign on the way in reads ‘no dumping’. The road into the campground is narrow. Big rigs should grab one of the first spots. The further back the spots get smaller. Great sunsets. Low light pollution yields great star views.
Several types of cacti here. Like a dense forest. The cholla are the ones to steer clear of. Nasty hooked spines!
This is BLM land. As such, there is an active target practice range to the West. If that puts you on edge, best to go elsewhere.
The intensely spiney cholla, jumping cholla, depositing their segments at will, will get you. I swept my site, set up the side shelter, only to find more had fallen off in the vicinity. One got my foot, and they are hard to pull out and hurt like the dickens. This is not a place for sandals. Maybe I should wear my ski goggles to protect my eyes. (seriously) My lizard friends came to visit and I scouted some tarantula holes. However, I love all the cactus and will slip on the heavy duty hiking shoes tomorrow (and all the time) and take a look see. There are several people scattered about and not really sure how far the lane into the area goes. There is enough solitude for everyone. But, I do hear someone singing. 👂
Very peaceful for the most part, sites are well spread and the plants provide privacy. Road a bit bumpy but any size can make it. I saw all sizes of rigs. There is some wild life such as foxes(came out at night, very pretty), ground squirrels, rabbits, hawks as far as I could tell. If you have pets with you just be careful as there are a lot of cactus of different types all over the place. Also it's dry camping so make sure to bring supplies.
Great cactus land. Just about every species of cactus that can be found in Tucson can be found here, or if your not really careful it will find you. Good dry camping with little trash, and only some traffic. Flies... It's got those too. Palo Verde, Cactus Wrens and Creosote Bush that the pesty desert wood rats LOVE, so leave your hood up. Plenty of Arizona sunset.
Some road noise, some road dust. Serious caution needed for dogs, the cactus is easy to get into, and hard to keep out of.
