My husband had an unplanned hospital visit. From the emergency room, he was admitted to the hospital for a reddened leg with significant swelling. As the symptoms got worse by the day, his leg getting redder, more swollen and a continued fever, we felt helpless. We did not receive much information from the nurses or physicians and were not given any specific care plan on how to handle my husband’s increased symptoms and what they could imply. We contacted Nurse Patient Advocate Linda Garvin, who provided us with valuable information on: the physician hierarchy in a hospital, gave us specific questions to ask, what kind of specialists to request with appropriate time frames, hints on how I could keep connected with information from the hospital staff, speak on my husband’s behalf and lastly how to plan adequately for discharge. Based on Linda’s prompt and extremely helpful guidance, my husband’s condition slowly improved and he was sent home. He ultimately recovered without any serious continuing problems.
After I was informed that I needed a surgical procedure in the hospital, I hired Linda as our Nurse Patient Advocate. Our goal was to have her educate and prepare both my wife and myself for my surgery. Linda provided us with extremely helpful information on how to best “prepare for my upcoming surgery”, ways to avoid hospital associated infections, suggestions for avoiding medication errors, hints on trouble shooting problems that could arise while being hospitalized and gave a tool to my wife that she could utilize in reviewing my postoperative discharge information with the hospital discharge coordinator, as well as a home safety checklist. I recovered from my surgery safely and without incident. Linda exceeded our expectations and she was a great resource at a vulnerable time.

Linda is a great nurse advocate for maintaining one's health. I have had bilateral knee surgeries (3 surgeries on each knee, including a total knee replacement of the left knee), arthritis, disc degeneration and scoliosis. I hired Linda as a health consultant to get some information and instruction on stretching, nutrition and wellness recommendations. I am a long distance bike rider and want to continue with this activity as long as possible. Linda was a great resource and health coach. She provided me with some outstanding suggestions on which foods and ingredients could be contributing to my inflammation, along with what foods would be helpful for me to reduce inflammation in my body. I really appreciate the information she provided me on what home health care products could be harmful to my health, with recommendations on cleaner and cheaper products, as well as how I can reduce my exposure to unsafe chemicals in my cosmetics and personal care products.
I consulted with Linda about my elderly mother who has several health problems. Her nursing expertise provided our family with several helpful suggestions on my mother’s home safety, practical solutions for organizing her health and medication information, hints on preventing falls and guidance on different treatment options. Due to the information she provided, my mother will be able to stay in her own home for a longer period of time. Linda has great concern and compassion for aging adults and was a great resource for our family.

I overheard a conversation the other day while I was at Target. Two women were in line behind me and one of them was telling the other that she recently had gained about 4-5 pounds and she was contributing it to lack of sleep.
