High Sierra Ranger District Office

When this office was open, the staff was friendly and helpful. Loved stoping here each year with my two boys. Knocked off a star because, though the open hours were listed on the gov website, the office is actually closed for covid.
Payment is now required for online wilderness permits (shouldn't a worthless online system be cheaper than in person help and guidance??). Free permits are no longer available in person. If you are not using the main trailheads, forget about trying to navigate the online system. My recommendation is to skip the permits as the online system is too much of a hassle; if you stay off the main trails, your chances of a ticket are practically nil anyway.

Had to get a wilderness permit from here on 7/3/2020. They're taking very serious precautions for COVID-19, which I appreciate. The person I spoke to on the phone was kind and patient as we went through the application.

Summer hours they are open on the weekends. Very helpful front desk for info about the forest. Nice display of wildlife, forest service merchandise, and souvenirs.
