Better than paid tubing park
Solitude and clean air made up for the 25 degree early morning temp. Very clean. Toilets adequate. Cold camping requirement meant no wood burning so contact forest service to confirm fire restrictions before making the trip.
This is by far the most beautiful mountain camping area in all of Ventura county! There are several day hikes in multiple directions from the campsite. I wish there was a pond or lake close by. But that would only make it the most perfect spot ever. So, that being said, perfection is an unrealistic expectation (unless you wanna drive five or six hours to the east side of the Sierra Nevada’s).
Beautiful place. The campground is a five minute walk from the parking lot so it feels a bit less like car camping. The elevation can get you winded from simple tasks after a while and disrupt sleep. Because this campground is free as long as no snow is on the ground (otherwise you need an adventure pass), some crazy and annoying people come here.
Easily one of the best campgrounds around. You can't park immediately next to your campsite, but the walk is short and the selection is nice. Stay a bit far from the Outhouses and bring your own toilet paper. The two mile hike to the peak is well worth it and be prepared for the parking lot full of astronomers and telescopes (one of the attractions in my mind). Great pine forest campground!
