Great small museum with a gift shop. Plenty of parking just out front. Beautiful hilltop location. The collection of art that resides there permanently is mostly religious and patriotic. What keeps me coming back here again and again is that the majority of the space is used for special exhibits and shows, which are frequently wonderful and among the best art shows in LA. Recent years have seen exhibits on David Bowie, Eyvind Earle, Bob Baker Marionette Theater, and the history of panoramas (featuring LA's own fabulous Velaslavasay Panorama). And on top of featuring well-curated, interesting, cool art shows, admission is free. If you visit on the week-end, you can find lots of great foodie food at the pop-ups along nearby Glendale Blvd.
Beautiful cemetery. I went to see the largest painting on the west coast. So beautiful!
I come here on Good Friday every year to meditate, pray and observe. The crucifixion painting is breathtaking (& massive). Its so peaceful and serene here. There’s no place like it (near by). I would have to make a trip to Mater Dolorosa (Sierra Madre) or Serra Retreat in Malibu to find a serene spot to meditate and pray. I love the exhibition and the ambiance. You also get a beautiful view of the city!
For those who need a break from hectic city life, I recommend you take a break here.
This little museum was delightful. On the day we visited, there was a special display over two rooms, of Bob Baker's marionettes. The lady in the gift shop told us there would be a new display next month. In the front part of the museum are some really beautiful bronze statues, sculptures and paintings - all of which we loved. Each exhibit is accompanied by interesting background information. There's also a lovely gift shop. Admission to the museum is free.
i wasn't expecting much when i noticed that this museum was part of the cemetery but my mind quickly changed once we made it to the top of the hill and saw the chapel and building next to it. we were lucky to visit on a very peaceful and slow day with not much foot traffic so much of the small viewing areas were empty. it is very small and only 3 small sections but i highly suggest setting aside an hour from your day plans and visit to see some of the statues on display. we even said we'd like to return in a few months or a year to see a new exhibit or something else they might add.
