We spent our second night in the Preserve at a dispersed campsite at the Kelso Sand Dunes. We found a great location: a designated spot that was flat and not far from the dune trailhead. The night sky is incredible out there!
Scenic views that makes you wanna stop every couple of miles to take photos. Great road to join Route 66 when driving from Vegas to LA.
It was one of the best places I've ever visited. So other-worldly, remote and unique. It was 100F with no cars or people anywhere around. There are no services for the length of this park, so ensure you have water, food, and toilet paper!
I was lucky enough to be there when the desert plants were in bloom. Extraordinary beauty in infinite dusty beige fields of sand with tufts of grey-green foliage.
The main road takes you through the changing desert landscape, moving from lush shrubs, Joshua trees, and various cacti through to true barren desert dunes (Kelso) and blackened hills.
Would 100% do this again if ever back here.
We only drove around the Desert Studies Center, Soda Springs, & Lake Tuendae Loop Trail on Zzyzx Rd. It was really beautiful and peaceful. A nice, quiet walk.
Amazing area! So many different landscapes in one location and the staff were super friendly. Fill the gas tank and pack a lunch if you visit because there isn't really anywhere inside the preserve to stop. We spent the entire day hiking different areas and I would absolutely recommend it to everyone!
