(July 15, 2019, 5:28 pm)The hike is pretty short from the street to the fork where you take either the moderate route or the strenuous route. The strenuous route will take you through the sandstone walls, and eventually lead you down the moderate route. Basically, it's a loop. Trekking though the sandstone walls was very scenic, but it can get very narrow. After taking the only ladder up to the top, you can take a panoramic picture of the lagoon below. Great hike for the family!

(June 2, 2019, 12:44 am)Very nice trail so close to urban jungles. Not particularly challenging, but should be fun for the entire family.
(March 10, 2019, 9:50 pm)The slot canyon was amazing. It's a bit more of an intense climb than some others, and very narrow. Great view once you get to the top. We brought adventurous kids (4 and 8) and they managed fine.
Outside the slot canyon the trail is relatively flat, with joggers and dog walkers.
(February 10, 2019, 1:17 am)The Reserve encompasses nearly 1000 acres and has seven miles of trails through 5 different types of habitat. Over 700 species of plants and animals live there. The Lagoon is a major place on the Pacific flyway so good birding especially in the winter. In Feb-Apr lots of flowers.The San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy and San Diego Parks and Recreation are restoring native plants to the area. Lots of benches along the trails to rest and just enjoy the views. In the evenings you might see the herd of mule deer out feeding. There are free guided walks on Saturday mornings and a nice museum with live native animals. Don't miss Franklin, the desert tortoise! Just a wonderful place to spend some time.

The main trail here is a small nature walk inside the lagoon with lots of natural beauty, extensive shade, informational I love San Elijo Lagoon. I haven't wandered all the trails in this area, but the parts I have explored are pretty awesome.
