I was Hiking Three Sisters Falls on 02/27/2019 when I slipped and fell by the falls. I knew it was bad because I could feel my left ankle swelling immediately. I sat for about ten minutes using my trekking poles putting as much of my wt on the right
got off the rock to eat lunch. I had a knee brace that I slid down over my ankle and used my long sleeve shirt to wrap around Left ankle for support.
Using very colorful words headed back for about 1 1/2 miles going so slow when we got to a steep crevice we started down when I lost my footing on my right foot and rolled three times and banging my left ankle. I screamed and cried so hard... Now no weight barring on left my life partner Jim went to find cell service and get help. While he was gone placed my poles across crevice and put my leg/ ankle up. I had water/food/ knife/ headlamp and put my jacket on as it was turning cold. Hikers came by and met Jim further down the trail and when they got back called for help.
First helicopter arrived very quickly and he assessed me but since I was nonweight bearing called for a bigger helicopter 🚁. This too was amazingly quick.
Multiple people attended me evaluating the situation and me very professionally. I ended up putting my arms around two responders as a third held my leg in place. This was not easy for them as the crevices was deep and narrow. They ended up lifting me up into the helicopter. Again all done with amazing teamwork and skill. Safety was always noted.
Arrived to where our truck was parked but Jim was hiking back 1 1/2 miles and he had the keys.
Because of severe pain and signs of shock setting in Cal Fire Station 51 direction of Capt. Schaefer and Mery Medical Transportation determined me to go the the hospital.
Matthew Cullen Paramedic and Taylor Reddick EMT evaluated me and reassured me I would be ok.
Again very efficient and with such dedication was given pain meds in route to Sharp Memorial Hospital. Matthew also called and spoke to my daughter and Jim and reassured them I was going to be ok which in turn made me feel better.
Arrived at hospital and again very smooth transition form one care team to another was amazing.
Everyone from nurse, doctors and techs were very professional and caring!
I could of not gotten any better care during my whole ordeal!
Thank you everyone!
Sincerely,
Constance J. Starck
PS I ended up with Three fractures on my left fibula and one on my left ankle.
