Some loose rocks, due to the recent rain. I didn't bring one, but would recommend a hiking pole for the descent. A fellow hiker was wearing a mesh covering over his hat. Definitely a good idea. Or some lemongrass oil or other repellent. They were thick!
This was an easy hike, up along the 5 Oaks Trail with good amount of shade and down on the Volcan Mountain Trail. Saw trail maintenance happening by the Parks and Rec Department which was reassuring.
Arrived to the trail head around 7:30AM, we were the only 2 on the trail. Saw more people going up when we were almost back to the start.
There is street parking on both sides of Farmers Road. Two porta-potties by the trail head entrance gate.
Once the sun rose the area became pretty hot. We didn't have the pleasure of spotting either mountain lions or rattlers but a few red tail hawks and lizards.
We added a few challenges to our hike by exercising at every bench on the trail. Beautiful views. Lots of opportunity to meditate along the way.
Park is open sunrise to sunset. Will be back.
One of the best hike in Julian. Lovely trail, beautiful trees, observatory, 360 degree views from the top - good for hiking and possibly difficult mountain biking trail. parking is super easy in the road.
Nice hike but make sure you are ready with eyes open. This is a 5 mile out and back with a bit over 1200 vertical feet. Some shade, but a lot of exposure also. Water, sunscreen and good footwear are an absolute must. I think the first 1/2 is the most strenuous but opinions may differ. A great option is to take the main train up and return using the Five Oaks trail which diverges from the main trail and connects again (you can't get lost). Great views from the top from Catalina Island to the Salton Sea.
This is not an easy hike but sure is fun to be in the fresh air above Julian. Park on the street below and make sure to bring plenty of water because its an uphill climb all the way :) Nice to have bathrooms at the beginning of the trail too.
