David Randle's workshop on using "templates" for songwriting was terrific. I am an experienced songwriter but I always appreciate learning new approaches to stimulating my own creativity and expanding my ability to express myself in a musical way. The workshop took me back to some of my favorite writing classes in college, where we were given exercises to develop our understanding of various techniques in writing prose. Imagine that sort of approach applied to songwriting. We didn’t actually sit and write, but were given a healthy selection of tools for future use. In two hours, I think we touched on every subject a beginning songwriter (or any songwriter) might need to get started. Each exercise could be seen as a launch pad to start our own songs.

Considering the breath of material covered - song forms, melody crafting, lyrics, keys and chord spellings, harmonic framework, it’s amazing how thorough David was. His technical knowledge of what makes music work is impressive, and he always made time for questions, repeatedly checking to make sure we understood his offerings before moving on to a new subject.

Overall, David’s workshop was well worth the relatively small investment for anyone looking to deepen their knowledge and improve their songwriting chops. Lots of songwriting bang for the buck!
