Great little hike up a small hill to great views of the city. The hill used to have a building on it from the world's fair and you can still see remnants of the foundation. There's a pretty long trail going all the way around it if you want a pretty walk, or go strait up or down by using the stairs at the waterfall. There are two bridges on each side of the hill to get up to it. Be sure to check out the waterfall too if you're here.
So much to see without spending a penny. We park (for free) along Stow Lake Drive and walk the path to cross Rustic (Boulder) Bridge, which rowboats & paddle boats pass under. An easy, relatively flat walk on the island/hill goes past the Golden Gate (Chinese) pavilion and then to the base of Huntington Falls. Or you can trek up to the top of Strawberry Hill for a distant view of the Golden Gate bridge. Take a picnic and stay awhile. Then walk down the stairs that go along side Huntington Falls. Many photo opportunities of birds, plants, water. Especially peaceful on weekdays!
This is an amazing little hill in the middle of Stow Lake. A short hike to the top would give some good exercise for the day. A view from the top, and the sound of the waterfall is refreshing to the mind and soul.
You will likely forget that you are in the middle of a very busy city.
The last time I went was maybe 3 mos. ago and supposely they have done some changes. I'll go up there one day soon. But the view is spectacular.
Each month, we build on the progress begun at our first work day in September 2010, maintaining and adding more and more butterfly habitat on the slopes and top of Strawberry Hill. This is an ongoing program - we're looking for both occasional volunteers, and those who would like to be involved on a regular basis.

Stow Lake: (415) 752-0347 : The mini retreat in the center of the park is a picturesque island called Strawberry Hill which is great for short, but steep hikes. Huntington Falls tumble down the hill into the lake, near a charming Chinese pavilion.
