They do not take Appointment.. Lucky it was not crowded when we were there for blood draw.. If it is crowded, for sure expect delay..
I visited several doctors in NY for debilitating fatigue (2 endocrinologists, 3 or more GPs, holistic doctors, NPs, and more) and got wildly different answers and no relief. Moreover, the diagnoses I received were mutually exclusive of each other, so there was no progress at all. I was sleeping almost around the clock and was only able to do one, or possibly 2, errands on a good day, but then had to go home to sleep-often until the next day. This went on for a few years, sadly. Only one doctor tested me for Lyme and that is because I pushed for it. Lyme is endemic to NY and I can't explain why I wasn't tested by more of these doctors, and tested more thoroughly given my symptoms, which were pretty classic. I heard about OMI and went to Ca. because I felt I didn't have other options to get well. I met with Dr Kaufman who was thorough, informed, took an excellent, detailed history, and tested for almost everything using good labs. And, he was helpful, personable and explained everything in detail.
In the end I was diagnosed, with two tick borne illnesses (there are many more than Lyme) that all the others missed largely because they were unaware there are other tick borne illnesses. (it's sad when you have to explain this to health care workers and the county board of health) I was given medicine and recovered. I can't say enough great things about OMI. I think if you have a complicated illness you should go to OMI instead of wasting your time and money trying to find a doctor who will actually pursue your illness instead of using outdated labs and then suggesting you come back in 6 months. In my case the labs were Igenex, Quest and Galaxy. Dr Kaufman reviewed the lab results with me item by item and explained what everything meant so that I could understand it. I highly recommend OMI and specifically Dr. Kaufman. All of this is expensive but in the end I think less so than the total of all the other doctors and labs you will visit without resolving anything.
All this is not to say that OMI can cure everyone, because they can't. But it's probably your best shot for complicated illnesses. If I could give Dr Kaufman 10 stars I would.

I had been sick for over 6 years and was in the "care" of doctors at Kaiser. Kaiser doctors NEVER provided a diagnosis and in the end, told me my symptoms were in my head.
Last year, I developed neurological disorders that rendered me unable to work. A friend recommended Open Medicine Institute. I called and they had a 6 months waitlist! I was shattered. So I sent OMI a video of my seizures and they squeezed me in within 2 weeks.
Doctors at Kaiser, in 6 years, never diagnosed me. Within 28 days (the time it took to run my complex blood cultures – cultures take a long time), I finally got answers and started treatment. That was a year ago.
Since being in the care of OMI, my neurological symptoms have decreased, stamina stronger and I am improving. OMI specializes in hard to solve cases and I am forever grateful for the care I have received there.
Regarding insurance, they do not accept insurance, but I am able to file for out of pocket reimbursement with my new health insurance. Also, OMI will accommodate which labs are used based on what your insurance covers (but you have to call your insurance and ask which lab corporations are covered).
Blood draws have always been very easy there and I've had 24 draws in the past year from 3 different labs, 2 other medical facilities and from OMI. The phlebotomists there are wonderful. There was one time, when they were replacing a phlebotomist that a temp didn't do as clean of a draw, but it was tolerable.
My father was a medical researcher, and I use to assist him with heart taps and blood draws on animals, so I am very familiar with various procedures. I'm also familiar with why external labs are needed (especially for specialized cultures and studies). I liken it to the eyewear industry – those with specialized prescriptions, like prismatic lens, require external labs to fill the orders – and believe me, it is best to have labs that specialize.
I also appreciate that my doctor at OMI is very open to my concerns about procedures and whenever I've written my doctor with side effects from medication, he responds promptly. I am very happy with all of the care I have received there.
