“Excellent organization. High quality musical instruction that's enjoyable for the boys. From a music-learning perspective, a real bargain since there are also weekly theory classes in addition to weekly rehearsals. They both now know more music theory than I can remember (and I played piano and violin for 12 years). The directors have a magical way with boys--I find it impressive that they can direct all that energy into the creation of such beautiful music. Both my boys sang in the choir (one still does) and they always leave in the best mood. I have always been surprised that they like this option as much (or even better) than the svarious sports they play in.”

“This is a fantastic daycare and school. The children have lots of outside time, about 1 hour, 2 times a day. They have two playgrounds, and they put up giant shade sails in the summer for extra shade. The school is adjacent to Greer Park, and the older kids also go there from time to time. Each week, the kids have a music, chinese, spanish, and a movement class. The teachers use Montessori teaching methods with traditional Montessori jobs. They track each child’s progress individually and can introduce new topics when the child is ready and interested. They allow for children still learning to focus and incorporate activities that help teach focus. It really works - the children seem to be beyond their peers at other schools. I’ve seen 4 year olds blending letters into words, and I’m surprised at all the skills the children have. There is a low teacher to child ratio, compared to other schools. The teachers are great at turning the inevitable children’s social issues into teaching moments. The kids are really well behaved in general. The teachers are very tolerant about potty training, and they just request plenty of clothing and bedding to keep up with accidents. The school vacation schedule matches most employers. There are no long vacations. There is extended care if it is needed, from 7:30-6. One of their classrooms has a chinese immersion program.”

“To be quite blunt, this academy has it all. From the exponentially friendly staff, to the coaches, who are not afraid of going the extra mile to make sure you grasp the inner workings of tennis. Not to mention the One Stop Pro Shop, where I managed to purchase tennis shoes, a racket, and have my tennis racket restrung. All of this orchestrated by an amazing team of coaches lead by Kim Grant, who played, and then coached on the Pro Tour.”

“UPDATE: a school is only as good as its teachers; administration and philosophy can only take things so far of course. Emerson had two great teachers, but for whatever reason it did not re-contract with its upper elementary teacher this year. She was heading towards a decade at Emerson, universally loved by students and parents alike; a high performer, who's students transitioned into middle school effortlessly. Whatever the reason it can't be a good one, and as such I have become hesitant to recommend Emerson. The rest of my review below still applies if they can replace this star and address the administrative woes that led to her loss. Imagine a school in session the same number of days you work, and for 9 hours each day so you can drop off and pick up your child outside of work hours. And no more stringing together camps and vacations to cover school breaks designed to allow farm children time to work the harvests because the school only closes for legal holidays. Now imagine your child wants to be in school that long, and doesn't miss the breaks. Why? Perhaps they appreciate no homework, the same way you like to leave work at work. Or they don't realize the length of the day because its filled with a full curriculum, including art, music, P.E., two languages, sciences, history, and of course the core subjects. They also likely appreciate being able to advance in the core subjects at their own pace. Second grade math, fourth grade reading; wherever your child is and however they progress, Emerson's teachers will help your child learn. And progressing at their own pace means there is nothing to fall out of step with, so you take vacations whenever and for however long you want. The only thing left to wonder is why all schools are not like Emerson. ”

“Ohlone has many great traditions and it was thriving school when I went there. It prepared me for middle school and is a happy friendly place. The new principal apperantly has made some questionable choices that may have tainted the school, but the ohlone I knew was a great place.”
