This is a unique place to visit. Vast area of emptiness, except for the large water body of the bay. Great for an early morning walk / hike. The nearby downtown of Alviso is a good place to stop by.
Great place for walking, birdwatching and photography
This wildlife refuge is about 2 miles off CA-237 so it is very convenient to visit. There is an Environmental Education Center with a viewing room, and some play area for children.
The trails are pretty easy and the times I visited there were no crowd at all. There were a lot of egrets in the area, and it was a good place to photograph flying and feeding egrets. A long telephoto lens is required though. The times I visited, the gate closed at 4:30. They did try to alert visitors of the closing time through the PA system, but I wonder if you would hear it if you were deep in some trail. To avoid the trouble of moving the car outside the gates before 4:30, one could park in the handful of spaces right outside the gates and walk in via a short trail or through the paved road. It is a short walk so it is OK.
It is a nice area to visit and walk some quiet trails.
Great place to get up close to wetlands by the bay. Watch birds, particularly during the migration season. The education center has lots of information on the area and the work being done to restore the surrounding salt ponds back to productive wetlands that will protect the from flooding. There are flat trails that can be walked and a small butterfly garden.
Great place to learn about the ecology of the bay, local, history, abundance of multiple species of birds. Very pleasent knowledge staff eager to share their experiences with you. To make it more enjoyable, the Midge population is massive, (The flying gnat like things) bring a face net to make it a non issue. Go out have fun beautiful views all around. See ys there.
