We feel very lucky to find Coach Steve and his excellent coaching staff. Coach Steve is one of the best coaches we have had. He is not only very professional but very enthusiastic about training young players. He focuses a lot on the play’s strokes and fundamental skills, and systematically guides them to succeed step by step. He can point out my son’s mistakes clearly and teach him the effective ways to improve patiently. His class is also fun and engaging. He cares about his students’ long-term athletic goal and growth-mindset development. With close cooperation with the parents, Coach Steve also helps us to learn more about how to better support my son on the beyond the court.
My sons (currently nine years old) have been training at the Brookside Tennis Club for about two years. We have been training with Coach Steve for the private lessons and the club in the afternoon clinic when time permits.
Brookside is a great club to help the young kids improve their tennis skills. Their drills are designed to help the kids to improve their fundamentals and match plays. And the coaches' feedbacks are catered for each kids' strength and weakness during the drills and match plays. The club also has youth players at different levels so you will always to be able to find the right player to hit with your kids.
I also like how Coach Steve operates the private lessons:
Focus on the fundamental. This is exactly what nine year old players need. Without a solid foundation, their tennis skill growth will hit road block much sooner.
Reinforce the technique. Do not expect the kids can learn a perfect forehand ground stroke in one or two lessons. Coach Steve reinforce the technique he has taught during his lessons and he is also consistent with his requirements.
Engage with parents. Coach Steve kept the parents engaged during the process. From time to time, he forwards me videos that can help the kids to shadow swing at home. I also forward the home training videos to Steve. He would reply with his comments quickly.
Make it fun. While being a disciplined coach, Steve has a good relationship with kids and keeps them entertained. My boys enjoy playing tennis at the club and cannot wait to come to the private lesson every time!
If you are searching for a tennis club for your kids, I suggest you give Brookside a try! I am sure the coaches there will not disappoint you!
Coach Steve received education in Professional Tennis Management and teaches the most important technics to students step by step. There is no detour in the learning path.
Coach Steve also actively plays tennis matches which not only keeps his own skills up-to-date but also demonstrates his enthusiasm to students. He has great relationship with students at different levels. They love to come for training. He matches students by skill levels and sets reachable goals for them. He also provides practical training approaches that students can adopt outside his courts to speed up the improvement.
He's a role model and source of inspiration for his students.
Great coaches. My 4 kids really enjoy training here. Their techniques have been getting better which encourages them to want to play more. The Brookside facility is very well maintained with plenty of tennis courts to play on. Highly recommended!
When I moved to the San Jose area a few years ago, I searched all over the region for the best junior development I could find for my 9 year old son. In my opinion, Brookside is the best... They practice the “Great Base” tennis philosophy from the teachings of Steve Smith. My son’s technique and tournament play has improved dramatically since we started going to Brookside and taking from Coach Steve Roberts and his staff. They are extremely knowledgeable, passionate and dedicated. If you want your child to establish a foundation and learn the right way to play tennis, I highly recommend Brookside Tennis Training!!
