I admit I was getting skeptical as to the existence of this dog park as we drove through a very industrial area, but, sure enough, at the end of the road is a lovely dog park with access to the bay. It was fenced in well, there is a water fountain for the pups, picnic tables for the people, sandy beach, and water access. It was a little scary when our Scottie dove into the open waters and started swimming, but he did fine. This was his first time in such deep water. The other dogs were friendly and everyone had a grand time running about and splashing in the water. Definitely worth checking out.
Our second visit with our pup, a 100lb. lab. It's an awesome place for dogs. There is plenty of beach for you to get away from others if you choose. The waters have been calm so, you can go out far enough for them to swim. The "other" dogs have been good. The pet owners don't always pay attention to their pets so, that can be annoying. There is a popular pier for fishing. I don't know how much luck they have "catching" fish.
Wonderful facility for dogs and their owners. Perhaps 300 yards of fenced beach front. At double gate entrance/exit there were 2 hoses to wash dogs of sand and dirt. A number of picnic tables about 50+ yards back from beach front. Dogs seemed to have amazing fun playing with each other on land, and many swimming in the ocean. And to top it off, it was free! A great big "attaboy" to the people responsible for creating and maintaining this facility!
Tampa really does have such a great network of dog parks. My dog and I enjoyed this park a lot. Picnic island is kind of off in a strange industrial part of south tampa. But once you are there it’s a well maintained park with picnic tables, benches, and a few hoses to wash your dog off. The area is fenced in down to the water, but as other have mentioned there is a hole in the fence at the end of the park that they patched up with plastic netting but any dog who is not afraid of water can easily wade right in and walk through it. That is my only complaint, otherwise great park and had a mix of Sandy beach and grass!
Beautiful place, but not that good smell.
