Discovery Village At Sarasota Bay

I do musical entertainment at retirement homes. I’ve been in nearly 3 dozen facilities in Manatee and Sarasota counties. I can tell you first hand that there are 3 main things I notice when I’m inside a retirement home:
1. Are the facilities nice and functional? Sometimes I can tell that the structure has been converted from some other use. Sometimes the hallways are dark and lifeless. Discovery Village is not a “retread” building but one designed for the pleasant home of some elderly folks.

2. Are the staff caring and capable? Walk into some properties and there’s a distinct smell. I blame that on the neglect of the staff. They are supposed to care for these precious souls. The staff at Discovery Village appear to care deeply for every individual. The place smells like home, not an institution.

3. Are there things to do or is the most exciting activity available watching the Price Is Right. I speak from experience, they have great internal programs and they bring in outside entertainment, like me.

Discovery Village at Sarasota Bay gets my highest marks on all 3 of my criteria. It’s a great place.

One of the biggest challenges a family has is finding a place for Mom and Dad when they can no longer live alone. We screened and visited numerous senior communities and Discovery Village at Sarasota Bay was by far our top choice. Discovery Village offers so many options for their residents to keep them active. The building is beautiful and welcoming. The living space was bright and very accommodating. The care staff were wonderful. They attended to mom and dad's every need in a very loving way. My parents adjusted very quickly and developed many friendships among the residents and staff. The management at Discovery Village is incredible. There is a "can do" attitude and any and all questions, concerns and requests are addressed along with a follow up if needed. Compassion, dignity, loving, caring, clean are the words I would describe Discovery Village. My parents are in memory care at this facility. We moved them six months ago from another local facility. After abuse and neglect experienced, our family is thrilled with Discovery and Mom and Dad are healthy and happy today. They are loved, as well as enjoy the fun activities that are planned. Our family is so thankful for the beauty of this facility, but also the care they receive.

At the time of this review, both my grandpa and grandma have been at Discovery Village approximately six months, having come there from a different assisted living facility. My grandparents are very well taken care of at Discovery. On top of the good day-to-day care they receive, they comment to us about how much they like the staff. The staff demonstrates that they care. Discovery takes a thoughtful, practical approach to caring for my grandparents, communicating with our family as needed, and (most importantly) treating my grandparents like "people" rather than "old people." They are treated with respect, and our family greatly appreciates it.
