I came to Zach with essentially no prior knowledge of the cycling world and barely a clue of what kind of cycling I even wanted to do. He was always very patient with me and took the time to listen to what my interests were. Based on some of the interests I mentioned to him, he suggested that I try a cyclocross race. Not having much of a clue at all of what cyclocross even was, I figured I would give it a try since one of Zach's friends was generous enough to let me borrow his bike. By the end of the race, I was absolutely hooked and felt super grateful that Zach had the idea of introducing me to cross. After the first race, I worked a lot with Zach to increase my fitness and learn cross-specific skills. As a result, I was able to have a successful and super fun time during my first cross season. By the end of the season, Zach had me feeling confident enough to head up to Asheville, NC for Cyclocross Nationals where I had an amazing experience because I felt prepared and supported the entire time by Zach. As I am anxiously awaiting the start of the next cross season now, Zach keeps me engaged with other cycling adventures and workouts that I feel will directly help me to become a stronger rider by the time the next cross season rolls around.

So that's the "narrative" version of why Zach is absolutely awesome, and here's the "BuzzFeed list" version (in no particular order):

    1. Communication - Zach is really proactive about periodically checking in to stay in the loop with your training and how you have been feeling. I really value open communication, so I appreciate that Zach makes me feel comfortable to contact him when I need to.

    2. Training Peaks - Zach enters our planned workouts into our TrainingPeaks accounts which makes it easy for me to plan ahead knowing how much time I need to set aside to devote to my workouts each week. I also love using TrainingPeaks because is easily syncs up with my Garmin, so I can get a high-level analysis right after my workout.

    3. Coach's Eye app - Zach offers one-on-one training sessions that have always been really helpful for me in part because of how Zach incorporates the use of the Coach's Eye app into these sessions. As a very visual learner, this tool works great for me because it allows Zach to video tape me on the bike and then play it back frame-by-frame, pausing to point out key areas and overlaying my video with another to easily show the compare-and-contrast. I always have those "aha" moments when I see my mistakes on the video rather than just hearing it explained.

    4. Personality - Zach is an all-around awesome person aside from being a really great coach. He is very genuine, caring, and a truly great listener. He's also very respectful which I think makes him a wonderful role model for young junior riders and even for the more "matured" riders because respect never gets old. I think personality definitely factors into the coaching aspect because Zach's personality makes me very comfortable trusting that he always has my best interests in mind.

    5. Holistic view of training - I really appreciate that Zach approaches our training from a holistic view by recognizing that our cycling life doesn't just happen in a silo apart from our non-cycling life. He has helped me become very aware of how much the "off-the-bike" factors like nutrition, sleep, and mental wellbeing have monumental impacts on my performance on the bike. Since Zach juggles a plethora of "off-the-bike" responsibilities himself, he is very cognizant of the balancing act that is required to successfully incorporate the time demands of cycling while not shirking other equally important parts of life, and he provides helpful advice in helping us maintain this same balance with our cycling.

    6. Results - I have seen a tremendous difference in my strength, power, and confidence on the bike after working with Zach for only a few months. It is really exciting to be able to feel so comfortable every time I get on the bike now and know that I can get even stronger as I continue to follow Zach's workouts.
