I contacted Tom about a dangerous situation at a stop light in my area near the Ala Moana mall. Tom listened, IMMEDIATELY took action and solved the problem. What more could you ask for in a representative?
Imagine it from his perspective. Hawaii’s local economy is heavily dependent on tourism. He's concerned about maintaining Hawaiis reputation as a pristine, safe and uplifting paradise that's enjoyed by all those who visit. He trying to do whats best for the local business community and job market by preserving Hawaii's good image as an attractive destination for tourists far and wide. This would ultimately create more jobs and revenue for everyone.
There is no shortage of land for the homeless if they can find places to squat. It wouldn't take much to install basic infrastructure in the homeless camp like running water, electricity and sewer. There needs to be a major relaxing in land use zoning, and minor relaxing in building codes to allow everyone to have a basic home. 500sf modular homes that are spaced a few meters apart could be easily manufactured, and custom built to provide for the needs of each family that would allow them their own personal space. Other high density housing can be costly because of taxes and condo HOA fees that make it unrealistic for these types( the less affluent, those who lack self reliance, drug addicts, the mentally ill and those who are unwilling to work)
Heres the real question though. Do the wealthy locals value money and land ownership over their fellow human beings? Do they wish to have the land all to themselves and simply have homeless vanish? Do they care about people more than money and the status quo to the point where the law makers and people of influence can stop being so rigid with zoning code, building code, and property taxation to allow for these human being to stake their claim?
