Lush tropical botanical gardens amidst the existing rain forest at the back of Manoa Valley, conveniently located minutes from downtown Honolulu. The main trails have been improved with laid gravel to reduce the typical mud found on most of Hawaii's rain forest trails. There is a section that showcases Polynesian canoe plants the Hawaiians brought to these islands to settle here (Hawaii has no good sources of carbohydrates in the existing flora). You may see wild sulphur crested cockatoos here...Australian parrot escapees from a tourist concession that went out of business nearby, as well as hear the magical shama...Hawaii's greatest songbird (introduced from Malaysia). The trail becomes increasingly more wild as you approach the back of the valley ending up at a small jungle waterfall (dry in periods of no rain). There is a $5 suggested donation to the University of Manoa who owns this property, given at the office next to the parking lot. The office will also provide a trail map.
Beautiful location. Lots of wildlife, a waterfall, and quiet. Looking for a place with great air to breathe and lush greens to view? Check this place out.
Beautiful place! Well maintained trails, but slick when raining. The poncho at the gift shop was very useful since we had a downpour. The falls at the end of the hike were gorgeous, especially since it had been raining.
Beautiful place. Hard to believe that it's right outside the hustle and bustle of Honolulu. If you look and listen closely you can see cockatoos high in the trees.
This is an absolutely beautiful place that seems less trafficked than the nearby Manoa Falls. You will probably need to park at the Manoa Falls parking lot below which costs $5. When you get up to the Arboretum visitor center, there is a suggested $5 donation, but I don't think it is required. Even with the donation, it is well worth it. There are plenty of beautiful views and a diversity of plant life. This is a good place to come and hike for a while. There are established, paved gravel trails but there are also some fun trails that are a little more wild and less paved.

(808) 988-0456. Perched high atop the lush Manoa Valley in a tropical zone that receives an average of 13 feet (yes, feet!) of rain each year, the 200-acre Lyon Arboretum was established nearly a century ago by a sugar farmers' association as a demonstration site.
