If you are looking for a psychiatrist know that wait times for Dr. Lam often can be long; one to two hours. The secretary suggested that I call ahead to see how long is the wait. Therefore, you can try to minimize your wait time. And, yes, Dr. Lam is often late for her first appointment of the day so call ahead and bring something to occupy your time. Dr. Lam does NOT have weekend hours, either, so keep that in mind.
That being said, after seeing a number of psychiatrists who see you for 15 minutes, throw you a script, and shoo you out, I would NOT change doctors.
If you are in need then Dr. Lam will spend time with you. At times I have spent nearly two hours in her office. Dr. Lam takes detailed, hand written, notes, and is very compassionate. If it wasn't for her I don't know where I'd be now. Not writing this note, I'm sure.
I have written a similar post about Dr. Lam on the HealthGrades web site.
My family has been seeing Dr. Lam for a few years now, after seeing a few other psychiatrists prior to that. Yes, the wait is often long, but it is well worth it. Dr. Lam is very caring and spends a lot of time with her patients, really listening and working to understand exactly what they need. If the long wait is a problem for you, try calling the office before your scheduled time. I have found the receptionist very helpful - she will tell me what time I really ought to come to shorten my wait. After years of seeing doctors who half-listen to you for a few moments and then rush you out the door with a prescription, I find Dr. Lam a wonderful and welcome change. Exactly the sort of person you'd expect to go into a profession meant to help people.
