Not much of a river bank area and narrow parking but it was made up for by being the most scenic of a few bridges we saw that day. There's a sign that states the various construction stages but we were lucky enough to meet the owner of the adjacent property who knew the history of every board and beam in the bridge!
Cool historical bridge not far from my home. It is a self-serve type of experience with just the bridge and a plaque telling about the original building and several renovations of the bridge. The only drawback I could see from the side of the bridge I stopped at were the no trespassing signs put up by the property owners on both sides of the road abutting the bridge to the south of the creek, did not see any to the north.
Love it.....I live in Carroll county so it is not uncommon to see me driving across it on the way home from Lafayette
Built by the Wheelock Bridge Company of Fort Wayne, Indiana, in the year 1872. The bridge spans 128 feet over the Wildcat Creek and is supported by cast iron abutments. The abutment design was patented by Alpheus Wheelock in 1870.
Rehabilitated in 1972 by Jack Isom Construction Company, Inc. The work included replacing broken floor boards and posting a 3 ton restriction.
Major rehabilitation was performed in 1981 by Howard Heavilon. The work included the construction of the steel support structure currently beneath the bridge and replacement of several floor beams and some of the decking.
Rehabilitated again in 2008. The work included the replacement of the lower chords, floor system, siding, and the deteriorated members of the upper chord. The work also included repairing and stabilizing the cast iron abutments.
Bought our house because of the bridge.
