My family and I have been a part of Fairfield Friends Meeting for over 5 years. We are treated like family and have developed many meaningful relationships at FF that are not based on agreeing on theology. We have also found a way to deep spiritual connection in this community. We aren't perfect nor are we an overly "religious" bunch but we are genuine in our common desire to make the world a better place.
Fairfield Friends: The cure for spiritual dullness and modern noise.
I grew up Baptist but stopped going to church in my early thirties due to a dulling of my spiritual life. When our son was born, we began to start looking in earnest for a church family, but one that didn’t ask us to betray our background in the sciences. We wanted to belong to a place that encourages thinking, contemplation, and asking questions. Finding such a place was a taller order than we anticipated.
Around this same time, we also noticed all the noise in our lives. Noise everywhere in the form of digital connections and distractions right alongside the necessary work connections we already engaged in daily. My brain was getting starved for quiet time. It felt like I was losing a sense of myself. Then one day in March, I decided to look up Fairfield. I was charmed immediately. The people I spoke with were so warm and inviting, so welcoming in a spirit of fellowship that I hadn’t seen in a long time. Sitting in centering silence was the practice I had no idea I was missing. It was wonderful. Over time, I dug into reading more about Quakers, their history philosophies. What I found was just as nourishing. They focus on consideration, deep thought, and quiet listening. Their ideals of simplicity, peace, integrity, and community, were ideals I strive for, and it was so wonderful to hear that an entire movement of people share those goals. I began to feel that I had been a Quaker all along, I just hadn’t discovered it yet.
Attending Fairfield Friends meeting feels like someone has turned up the contrast knob on the fuzzy picture of my life, and things are aligning into beautiful clarity.
Fairfield’s people are role models for my family and me. I’m astounded getting to know such passionate, intelligent, admirable people. I feel so fortunate to have met and engaged them in the few years I’ve been attending.
I've been attending this Quaker meeting for 18 years and thoroughly love it. It is progressive in theology, loving in character, and inclusive in community. I have become a better person because of the people here.
