We had an intern that gave us a tour of the house, the artifacts, and a detailed history of the family, the slaves that were there, Presidential affiliations, etc. She had great knowledge of all of this. The house is beautiful with an interesting collection of family possessions. We also walked the grounds to see the outbuildings which were interesting, as well as the family graveyard. It's worth the trip for sure and you can spend as much or as little time as you want. After the tour you are free to walk the property as you please.
Touring the house and the grounds is like stepping back into the 19th century. Really cool experience.
The Homestead was closed when I visited, as I had come to hike the trail and didn’t check on the hours. I walked around the grounds which are beautiful. I was welcomed by a very friendly cat! 😸 The cemetery was very interesting. I’ll definitely have to come back when it is open.
Our tour guide, Kathy, was so informative and excited to deliver her knowledge. She was so much fun and so kind. This made the whole experience exceed my expectations. She managed to share her wealth of knowledge about the artifacts in the home, describing the behaviors of the time period and lifestyle of individuals who lived in the homestead, while keeping the 6 children we brought interested and engaged! On short notice, she provided time period games after the tour, and spent a great amount of time showing us now they worked and made is feel so welcomed. I would return because this historic homestead had so many original artifacts, and the many classes offered for teachers cater to a particular areas of study. One could learn something new based on which experience they chose to encounter. But call ahead for this, as they need proper time to prepare and make purchases to accommodate. Thank you Kathy!!
This is a beautiful old home. We stopped to walk the trail which was quite challenging. There are some enormous old trees along the path. The trail needs some trimming back but was easy to follow. We also enjoyed seeing some rare running buffalo clover by the old family cemetery and trail head.
