Excellent place to learn about the Chitimacha Nation; their culture, history, and ongoing efforts to pass on the culture to current and future generations. Staff are very helpful, and the short film is important to see. Small, well curated museums are always the best, especially when people can tell their own history! Donations highly recommended... and visit the gift shop!

A well curated museum, with a very kind, knowledgeable, guide Teresa (spelling?).
Upon arrival, I called the phone number listed and left a message; I was called back within 5 minutes and quickly Teresa let me into the museum.
The tour starts with a video focused on the Chitimacha language revival program, helped by a grant through a Rosetta Stone language program. The language officially became extinct in 1940 after the last fluent speaker died, but with the commitment of Chitimacha linguistic leaders and other linguistic scholars, it is presently taught to over 140 students in the Sovereign Nation's high school. Language programs start as young as early the tribe's early learning center and the tribe's elementary school through 8th grade.
After the video, the tour goes through the museum, and Teresa answered my plethora of questions patiently and welcomingly. The reed woven baskets are particularly stunning in the collection of this small but poignant museum. I was asked to respectfully not take pictures.
Thank you so much Teresa and to all people who put in the work to make this museum accessible to any passerby. A privilege to get to learn about Chitimacha people, language, and culture!

I brought my third grade students here to learn about the history of the Chitimacha Tribe. The class and I were amazed at all the information, stories and artifacts shared with us during our visit. I highly recommend taking all Louisiana students to this museum to learn about our history. Big thank you to the tribe for the all the work they are doing to preserve their culture!

This is worth the drive. The museum is small and out of the way. We learned about the Chitimacha Native Americans who lived in this area. They have had a rough past from the people who tried to convert them to their christian god religion. I love seeing that they are now moving back to their heritage and living their life how they want instead of how the christian god people were making them live.
