What a great experience. We loved all the arts and crafts and the rodeo was very entertaining
The long ride is worth it.
Always a fun time.
Artwork and food, by the inmates, are purchase worthy.
When I heard that America's largest Maximum Security prison held a rodeo every year- I had to see it with my own eyes!
I wasn't sure how I would feel, going to a prison and watching the inmates get thrown around and potentially trampled by the bulls. But, once I saw it for myself- it seemed to me that everyone there was having a blast. I'm sure that the inmates here don't have much to look forward to on a daily basis, and not much excitement- and this rodeo gives them something fun to do, and make some money while they're at it. Bull riders make up to $500 if they decide to sign up. Also, I want to say... OMG THE FURNITURE!! I saw some of the most amazing hand built, carved wood furniture and sculpture, and the prices are wayyy less than buying the same piece at a store.
Helpful Tips for the Rodeo-
1. You CAN bring in your cell phone
2. Bring CASH- you'll need it.
3. Cracklins are bomb
4. Arrive a little late, and leave 30 mins early- you will beat all the traffic. (If you leave when it ends, it can take up to 2 hours to get out of the prison gates)
5. Don't bring a purse. Only bring ID and money in pocket.
Have fun!!
This was the best ever experience. Seeing all the different things they make and sell. The rodeo was just as great.
I don't have another rodeo to compare it to, but it's definitely an enjoyable day out between the arts and crafts, the food, the music and the rodeo which is chock full if various events. My advice is pack a cooler for WHEN YOU ARE LEAVING. The parking and leaving is kind of a nightmare and definitely a test in patience. Be prepared for at least an hour to get out of the parking lot.
