My husband is a huge Civil War buff. We went on a rainy, gray day. We were the only people to stop in at the visitor center but the staff was pleased to speak with my husband about the battlefield and answer all of his questions.
Great museum and extremely helpful staff! Staff offers info and tips and how best to take in the history of this extremely important civil war battle that saved Washington DC from confederate capture.
Great place for some history and a nice little hike. Stop at the visitor center and check out the second floor museum for a quick overview of the battle. Also a nice view. Was there on a warm day after a bunch of rain. Did the Worthington Farm trials. The Ford Loop trail went along the river and the Rangers advice to use some bug spray was spot on. The mosquitoes would have been unbearable without it. The Brooks Hill trail gets steep and has a nice view of farm land at the top of the hill.
Spring to fall they have a 11am ranger talk on the battle that was worth catching.
I think this battlefield often gets forgotten being closer to Antietam and Gettysburg but is definitely worth a visit. It's relatively small so just take a few hours at most to see. The visitor center museum (upstairs) does a really good job explaining the significance of the site.
Beautiful location for family photos! I spent hours trying to find the perfect spot for my clients photos & came across this battlefield. Never knew it existed! I’d recommend going to Best Farm for pics any day :)
