Great service!
My grandfather Thomas Lally (b 1856 abt and d 1920) donated over 30 acres of land for this chapel to be built upon. He built a yellow cottage right next door so he and his family could have easy access in the summer to their religion and the ocean. He has a stained glass window donated in his honor in the rear of the chapel (right hand side as you walk in from the front). It was built in 1896 and the benches are original and as such can be uncomfortable. I gave it 5 stars in honor of the generosity of my Irish grandfather. He married Nora Langan in 1886 and they lived in Amesbury at 24 Orchard street raising their 9 children there (Margaret, Mary, John, Catherine, Thomas, James, Nona, Agnes and Joseph).
It is open to the public seasonally.
A humble and airy church. No AC or bathrooms, but beautifully adorned and conviently located.
Star of the Sea Chapel from Mapcarta, the free map. Star of the Sea Chapel is west of Goose Island State Park and northwest of Neptune Harbor.
Work began on the chapel on April 14, 1896, and on June 11 they announced that the chapel would be dedicated on July 4. On that date, the Rt. Rev. John Brady, Auxiliary Bishop of Boston, decdicated the new Star of the Sea Chapel. From 1896 to 1947, the chapel remained a mission chapel served by the priests of Saint Joseph Parish in Amesbury.
