As a woman of color, who is also an immigrant, I realize I have cultural biases that are different from those shared by Americans - both white Americans and American-born people of color. It is difficult to listen to another human being without trying to show that I'm right and he/she is wrong when we differ.

I appreciate Pastor Dan's encouragement to be thoughtful and honest with myself and with others. He reminds us that Christ's love gives us the freedom to face the truth about ourselves with real hope for healing. As a follower of Christ, I realize I am a sinner. Which means I agree with God's analysis that because I do not honor Him as my Creator by obeying Him in everything, I deserve nothing from Him (not even life) and every good thing comes from Him. Christ died for me. He took what I deserve. He also lived the perfect live in submission to God for me (so His death as an innocent Man was not for Himself, it was for us). He lived the perfect life for me. He took the death I deserve. So, God loves me even as He loves Christ! What a wonder. Christ Himself says this (as recorded in the book of John).

Each day I must admit to God all of the ways I have chosen to do what I think is right instead of seeking His Will. His commands seem unreasonable, then reality persists. I hurt people, and I hurt myself. I realize that God Created everything, so His commands are the only reasonable way to proceed! This realization is a gift from God.

In addition, every day I ask for mercy for wanting God to judge someone who deeply wounds me by ignoring the commands of God, forgetting I need the same mercy. God is kind and merciful and it is his because of His mercy towards me that compels me to see mercy as the only way to respond to everyone. I am reaching for this.

    P. Dan and the community at CBC give me the freedom to live the truth that I am not more moral or right than anyone else. I only have the freedom to admit my immorality to God and ask for His forgiveness and His mercy to help me resist evil, with real Hope that He will do just that, because He chose to die for me when I was His Enemy so that now I might live for Him as His friend.

First time visitor and everyone greeted me. The pastor came by and was so nice and pleasant about what to expect during the sermon, how to navigate the facility, etc.
I am truly happy that I found a fellowship and worship center.

I have attended Cambridgeport whenever we visit our family in the area. I have found the congregation be welcoming and truly wishing to be obedient to Christ and wanting to help their fellow man.
The Pastor teaches from the scriptures and loves and welcomes all.

The full quote Josiah is referring to, with context, is as follows for those who do not wish to look it up themselves. It happens at 13:23 in the sermon titled "Overcoming Opposition." Personally, I am not much of a religious person myself, but I felt it unfair that someone was being slandered in such a way. I've walked into this church a couple times since it's in my area and always admired the way this pastor encourages his congregation to be open and honest with one another. It's refreshing to engage in honest communication with other people, even if you don't always agree.

"Racism - the valuing of some over others, some humans over other humans - is a powerful force that's at work in this world. It's an undeniable force that impacts all of us. Do you agree? In fact, it would not be too bold for me to say to you that, in an UNDESIRABLE way, in an UNDESIRED way, that I am racist. NOT BECAUSE I WANT TO BE RACIST. I DON'T want to be racist. But I've come to recognize through my life - just reflecting on my reactions to life and my upbringing - that I value some lives over others. I"M ASHAMED of that. But it's true. And I would say to you, and apologetically to all- those of you of color in the room- that I value white life over black life. I am sorry that that's true. I don't want that to be true. But it's true. And I can tell it's true through the course of my life just by how I respond to things - news articles and who dies and what happens. And I know I have other priority values in me that are completely ungodly and undesired by me - that are in me because I live in this world that has powerful forces that have shaped me - and I would say that have shaped you - powerful forces that are difficult to contend with. Those forces also keep us from following the will of God."

He is openly admitting to racial biases and condemning them. Humans have a natural tendency to side with those who are similar to them. This psychological behavior has been shown in numerous studies. As the pastor pointed out this is largely due to upbringing. A study performed by the University of Toronto showed that even children as young as 6 develop racial biases as a result of the homogeneous environments many of us grow up in. You can find this study with a quick Google search if you'd like to read it yourself. The pastor is not encouraging racism. Rather, he is encouraging the congregation to reflect on their own racial biases and act AGAINST them.
