“My wife has resided at Genesis Westford House for 15 months, from December 2017 to the present, in Poe's Corner, the memory care unit. She is now in her 9th year of early-onset Alzheimers and is unable to recognize us or talk. So we must be her voice and advocates. We try to visit every day after work, feed her lunch on weekends, and regularly chat with the nurses and aides about her time with them. We have been really pleased with most of the staff who are sensitive and responsive to her needs and ours. We have come to regard many as our extended family. We have been surprised by how many support staff from housekeeping, maintenance, kitchen and the downstairs office staff call her by name and talk to her when they pass through. Initially we had some doubts about the floor plan and cleanliness of the facility, but those doubts were resolved by physical improvements made last summer. It's widely reported in the news that virtually all nursing homes in the U.S. suffer from staff turnover and also low staffing levels on weekends. We've seen these patterns at Westford House, but have also seen the administrator doing her best to solve the problem by hiring and training quality staff. We have also learned that new residents in the dementia unit, need one or more months to become settled in and comfortable with the new surroundings. A key part of this is for the family to provide as much background information as possible so the nursing and activities staff in the unit can get to know the resident's needs and personal style as quickly as possible. We learned it was important to write this down because the nursing home has three shifts of people who must cover 24/7, so you don't see the same people every day. But having a written narrative on file and plenty of family pictures on the wall enables the staff to be more knowledgeable and also more caring and attentive. One last comment: Family Mutual Support. We have come to know spouses and adult children of other residents when they are visiting. We have a kind of spontaneous support community. Without being asked, we have eyes on each other's loved ones and we can share our experiences and insights with each other. That was not something we expected to find, but it has come to mean a lot. “My husband and I have stayed here two years in a row on our anniversary/his birthday weekend. Lynne is a fantastic innkeeper/hostess/chef! She really took the time to get in touch with us before our visit to be sure everything was going to be to our liking. She will make your visit what you wish... if you want the historic tour, you'll get it! If you want privacy and peace and quiet, she'll just be there when you need her. The house has wonderful character and charm and so much history. The fire was roaring when we arrived and the entire visit felt like a special getaway for us from work and the kids, even if it was only a few towns away. I would go just for breakfast if I could, homemade and delicious.”
