Dr. Kessler is passionate about natural medicine and oh so knowledgeable. See her and you will get real results versus “modern” aka prescription drug pumping medicine!
OK, I am going to talk about this from the Functional Medicine side, vs chiropractic. First of all, Functional Medicine gets a bad rap, simply because there ARE a lot of quacks out there who use the term less than honestly. What is it? Basically, a form of medicine that is based on looking at the body systemically vs. a disease in and of itself. However, one site that shall remain nameless calls it a bunch of hokum. It is NOT naturopathy or homeopathy, though. Good FM docs are typically Chiropractors (DCs) or Osteopaths (DOs) with a very strong background in nutrition. Hence, often you have to pay out of pocket vs. with insurance. I have been to two, now. The first one did nothing wrong, and in fact all the tests I did helped Dr. Kessler find my issues, even though I stumped the first doc.
I am an endurance athlete of basically 30 years (since age 12) who CANNOT lose weight and keep it off. When I say I have tried everything, I mean it. Eating less + more exercise is NOT the answer. I have gone to multiple "normal" doctors including 3 endocrinologists, multiple nutritionists, tried acupuncture, tried Atikins, Keto, Paleo--you name it. NOTHING worked. I would eat fewer than 1,000 calories/day and exercise daily 60-150 minutes, including weightlifting. All I got was tired and less performance. Dr. Kessler found my issue, and I am already down 11 pounds in about 10 weeks.
Do you have to buy a lot of supplements? Yep--that's the downside of FM. But it comes down to how willing a person is to fix a chronic, ongoing problem. Should you go to FM for cancer treatments or because you need joints replaced? Of course not--and any good FM doc will know that allopathic (traditional Western) medicine is certainly needed. That said, FM is the best route to take when "everything is normal" and yet you still don't "feel right"/are "having issues." I admit: I was hesitant, having already spent easily over $5k out of pocket in the last 10 years (not kidding), and was thinking "yeah, like anyone can help at this point." But I figured what was a few more bucks--if it didn't work, at least then I could say "No, really: I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING NOW." I am extremely glad I took this one last shot.
I have had a wonderful experience at MN Natural Medicine. It's so nice to get the real story behind my health and what I can be doing to be a healthier person without a lot of chemical fixes.
