Afton State Park

Beautiful park. Be aware that most of the trails are not circular, so wherever you walk you'll need to turn around and take the same path back. It's fine just something to know. Trails of various levels (none very difficult) and nice picnic area. Lots of parking compared to some parks.

Stayed in one of the yurts. Very cute, clean, sleeps 8. There are 3 sets of bunks with safety railings, one fold out bed - queen size. No electricity. Large picnic table, 2 separate benches, fireplace, wood available on site for $6, nice trails to hike, table and chairs inside. Lots of birds! Lovely place. $50/night!!

Although Afton can be busy on nice weekends (it's a 30 min. drive from St Paul) it offers many different hiking and picnic areas. Hike along the St Croix, then up to the top of the bluffs, where you encounter deep woods, pine forest and restored prairie. Stop and look closely at the wildflowers to see the native bees and butterflies going about their business. Stop in the woods to listen for interesting bird songs.

We come out here every year to rest and relax. The camper cabins are awesome. The trails are well taken care of and nicely laid out. If u want some time away from the cities and can't afford anything up north come out here.

If youre looking for some nice easy hikes then Afton is the place for you! There are beautiful paved and natural trails throughout the state park. They also have tent and cabin camping options. If you go on an evening walk you might be lucky enough to see some deer up close! We got to see 8 really close to the trail which was a cool experience. I look forward to camping here in the future as I have never camped before but this would be the perfect spot to!
