“Warning: This is a long review but worth it! By the time I finally found myself in Dr. Tilghman’s office, I had 18 months in such agony, I could no longer do any of the things I loved, including hold my precious granddaughter! Since surgery for 2 torn meniscus, I’d been crippled with gradually increasing pain the radiated from my lower back to my ankle on the left side & NOTHING relieved that pain. I had recently discovered that the pain wasn’t coming from the knee surgery as I suspected but originated from a previous injury to and botched corrective procedure on my L-1 vertebra which happened in 2011. Dr. Tilghman patiently listened to my long-winded explanation as to how I ended up sitting in his office, & when I finally reached the end, Dr. Tilghman nodded to me & asked one question. “Are you comfortable enough to walk to the door and back?” I was & did. His second question was, “Have you limped like that since the knee surgery?” Yes. It was then that I heard something I desperately needed hear. He explained that because I limped for so long, the old L-1 injury had become inflamed and began pressing on my spine and the L-2, which caused a domino affect on the L-3, L-4, and L-5. They were all inflamed & were the cause of the severe nerve pain I had been experiencing. He then said something I desperately needed to hear. “Severe nerve pain is second only to terminal cancer pain.” He felt that the best, safest option for pain relief were epidural spine injections into the affected areas. He explained the procedure in detail & advised that the injections last 4-5 months but that I might need a 2nd or 3rd set of injections each time. When he asked if we had questions, my husband asked about the possibility of surgery. Dr. Tilghman explained that despite the severity of my pain, my back problems were severe enough to contemplate back surgery & then added, “Back surgery is always a gamble; 1/3 of the time it works, 1/3 of the time it doesn’t work, and 1/3 of the time it worsens the situation.” YIKES! I chose to have the injections & we set a date. Dr. T. walked us out of the office, stopping us at the door to say how sorry he was that I was forced to endure such misery & promised to give me my life back. Two weeks later, he gave me my first set of injections. What I didn’t expect was to experience severe anxiety. As I was wheeled into the OR, I began to relive the horrific Vertebroplasty procedure I had undergone in 2011 when I had been forced to endure the most ungodly pain I can imagine, because the staff had not injected the anesthesia into my vein despite my repeated calls to correct the situation. The doctors ignored my reactions while I experienced something I can only describe as “Braveheart-like.” Dr. Tilghman immediately came over to me and gently patted me on the shoulder, while he shared what I had gone through with everyone in the room. He turned to me and promised that he would never allow anything so traumatizing to occur & promised to stop every few minutes to make sure I was ok. Then every single person in that St. Luke’s OR came over to say how sorry they were & made the same promise. After that, I feel completely safe, & the procedure was a “walk in the park!” When the nurse asked me if I felt good enough to get off of the table & walk with help to the nearby chair, I nodded & dreaded the pain I had come to expect every time I got up from a sitting or lying position. Miraculously, I was able to sit up without an twinge of pain & even stand & walk without having to wait until I trusted my leg to hold my weight & then walk without pain. I don’t think the enormity of what Dr. Tilghman had accomplished didn’t actually hit me until I got home & felt so good, I fixed a big dinner &, best of all, was able to hold my beautiful granddaughter. Dr. Tilghman saved my life, because I honestly don’t think I could have lived if I knew I had to experience such dreadful pain throughout my remaining days. How can you possibly thank someone for giving your real life back to you? If you can think of a way, PLEASE share it!”
