Note that there was a fire at the St. Louis Record Center in the late 1970's and many records were lost. Not saying he wasn't a WWI soldier but I found no record. Maybe he collected the odd bits you found.
His personnel records will indicate medals received, assignments, schools etc. Many personnel files were destroyed in the St. Louis Record Center fire in 1973. The Center uses alternate sources to reconstruct basic service information of records that were lost in the fire.
