I love medieval Catholic art, and I think this one is especially beautiful. It's a miniature, possibly from an illuminated manuscript or a missal. Mary and John are at the feet of our Crucified Lord. The Angels are collecting his blood in golden chalices, which reminds us of the Eucharist.
Their beautiful clothes and the elaborate gold of their chapel, plus the very fact of commissioning a book of this quality, indicate that the couple was well-off, as well as devout.
