Wilderness Park

This is hands down the largest and most diverse trail system I’ve ever explored in Nebraska! If you’re into hiking, jogging, biking, or just long, scenic walks, this place has it all. There are multiple trails branching out in every direction, so no matter what route you take, you’ll always find something new. You could spend hours out here and still not cover it all—it’s that big!

The variety of trails ensures you’ll never get bored. Each path offers different scenery, from open fields to forested areas, making it perfect for both relaxing strolls and more intense workouts.

I will admit, on my first trip, I got a little lost—there are so many trails, and I hadn’t quite figured out the trail color system yet. But once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty straightforward and only adds to the adventure. Just make sure to familiarize yourself with the signs and colors before you set off!

If you’re looking for a place to get outside and stay active, this trail system is unbeatable. A hidden gem for any outdoor lover!

Great place for a fun bicycle ride on trails that aren't too hilly, or a hike around just to enjoy the animals, water, and woods. Just watch out for stinging nettle they love to grow just off the trails. On that note Parks and rec does a great job of mowing most the trail edges. City also doing great work recently on creating easier access which has increased the safety. For example the pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks just past Walt library, and they just put a new sidewalk in off the Old Cheney entrance. Also good community involvement opportunities, ex. we helped take down some old barb wire that was no longer needed. Got to say when I'm feeling a little tired of the city this place is a quick great escape for a physical and mental rebalance. In fact, this park might be one of my favorite things about Lincoln, but I've been coming here for thirty years so I'm probably bias.

I love Wilderness Park. It's not as maintained as Pioneer's Park, but if you want a place with extensive trails and a wooded environment this is the place. There are tons of opportunities for hiking, biking, and horse riding. A lot of the trails also go through old bur oak stands, which is an ecosystem that there isn't much of around Lincoln.

A strong hike for the region through wooded areas with lots of small mammal and bird activity. There are also various trails across a relatively long park so one can get hikes of some length. The creek wide and winding with fowl and various bank and bed structures, and fallen trees. Most trails are also suitable for bicycling and well maintained. There is some diversity in tree age and in understory, although invasive species such as honeysuckle are making significant inroads in some areas.

A fun little trail through the woods along Salt Creek! It’s shaded for the most part and there’s parking nearby. No bathrooms though!
