Nice place, clean attentive personal.
Lost of parking.
On November 18, 2021, late in the evening, at my request, I was transported from Overlook Hospital in Summit to Hartwyck Care in Edison. It was my choice.
As I entered the building, I was impressed by the persons in charge; they were welcoming and caring; the premises were cluttered but clean.
I was taken to room 231, a double-occupancy room with a patient on the outer side next to the entrance. The TV was on, blasting away.
The night supervisor, Linda is her name, came in to begin the admission process with the usual pertinent questions. I told her the occupant had to lower the volume because we could not hear each other. She reluctantly did so. Soon the occupant turned up the volume.
Approaching midnight, I asked the occupant whether he would entertain the idea of turning off the TV. He was visibly angry. “Doing TV is what I do.” A strange and bizarre expression: “I keep the TV on, day and night, and doze off whenever I want.” I called in the supervisor, who I thought at midnight would cut off the TV or ask him to lower the volume. She was too scared to do anything.
I called my family and was ready to depart when the supervisor assured me that I would get a quiet room first thing in the morning.
At 4:30 in the morning, a nurse came in to ascertain how I was doing. I told her: “What do you expect from this noisy menace?” Soon, I do not know why or how, silence prevailed. The fellow was asleep, and when breakfast came in at 8 in the morning, he was asleep and furious that he was being awoken.
Hartwyck Care has many redeeming features, and as an individual who has been in the business of assessment, I would say that Hartwyck has more than met the standards of healthcare. However, before it is too late, it has to institute procedures to eliminate this type of wanton disregard for well-being in double-occupancy rooms.
The overwhelming number of individuals accommodate reasonable requests. Rules have to be established to hold accountable the one percent who do not.
I know most healthcare facilities have visitor hours and a time for silence. It is in the latter domain that Hartwyck is delinquent. My experience may be an aberration; however, rules are meant precisely to take care of such contingencies.
