I've spent two entire summers and four months working at Columbia and had no idea this was here! It's huge, it's beautiful, it's got a bunch of cool historic elements, and it's a president's tomb!!!! How do more people not know about this!!!!!
Also the staff is super chill and there's a gift shop across the road in the park. Again, so cool!!!!
Who would have thought how beautiful it could look on the inside. It's a 10 minute visit, but it's free and you can learn a little. Check out the sculptures and then look up who they are. You can learn a lot.
Grant's presidency was not successful, mainly due to the failure of Reconstruction. But he was a great general who was largely responsible for winning the Civil War. And, most importantly, he was among a minority of people at the time who actively advocated for equality for the recently freed and enfranchised Black population.
His tomb is a grand and majestic structure. It is a quiet place to visit that can be easily overlooked but it is definitely worth a visit.
The structure itself is amazing to look at. There is not much else to see inside. General Grant and his wife's crypts and a few mosaics. Oddly, there is no mention that he was president
One of my favorite places in all of Manhattan, perhaps because it is quiet and forgotten, or it is across the street from Riverside Church (beautiful in its own right), or maybe because the leading plaza is so peaceful. Or that it is an easily accessible National Monument from the 1 train subway one block away. Orrrr, it lies along Riverside Drive, a beautifully lined arterial with beautiful architecture that is quieter than the adjacent Riverside Park (noisy because the highway lines it to the immediate west).
It’s ALL of those things!
