This is a must see! You will learn a lot. I enjoyed the tour, seeing the memorabilia, and listening to Richard talk about the actors he has met.
Mr Evans is a life long fan of the western genre, in both television and movies. He has collected memorabilia for many years with a large amount being John Wayne souvenirs and now displays a large portion of his collection in a place where the public is welcome to visit. It's worth a trip to see it all, and best of all there's no charge!
It was a fascinating experience starting before I walked in the door. The "Cowboy" met me on the porch sporting an authentic holster and 2 pistols along with cowboy attire. If you like old westerns and history this is the place. Clemmons and this area is blessed to have such a unique, little western museum in our back yard. I will be back.
The Cowboy Museum offers a really awesome museum experience. My experience at this museum began with an in-person greeting by the owner, Mr. Richard Evans, clad in denim jeans, a denim button-down shirt, a black leather vest worn under a larger denim vest, black leather cowboy boots, and a cowboy hat sporting an American flag pin (which, he mentioned, is an authentic ‘old cowboy’ hat, dating back to 1865). Mr. Evans’ expertise on every object in his collection is really incredible. Many of the objects displayed are photographs, which are signed, and almost everything is hands on, which makes the Cowboy Museum an awesome visit for visual learners. Each historical artifact is incredible to see so close-up. The museum itself, too, is nicely laid out and fun. I particularly liked the rooms dedicated to John Wayne and the history of old cowboys in movies. Mr. Evans was so kind as to gift me a book on the history of actors in cowboy movies and a postcard showing an authentic photograph of Billy the Kid. I look forward to sending and reading them, respectively. As Mr. Evans explained, the mission of the Cowboy Museum is to “let young people learn about the old cowows,” and I encourage everyone to visit and do just that. It’s really fun, really charming, and really informative. I highly recommend.
This is an amazing place to catch a glimpse into the good old days of western style movies. There is no admission fees and is well worth the visit to see all this place has to offer. If you love old westerns you got to give this place a visit.
