By far the best experience at a DMV I've had. They are pleasant people to work with and don't make you feel like cattle. Worth the 45 min. Drive for us!
Nice employees. The man who checked me in was pleasant. I waited 2 hours to update my last name on my driver's license. The lady with blonde hair, middle-aged, who was going to have soup for lunch, was so sweet. I know she was so busy. I didn't get her name. They only negative was the long wait and the really sad looking building, the deteriorated bathrooms for the public to use. And, the equipment used to sign things with the electronic pad and pen is so damaged and run down that I couldn't even see my own signature when I was using it. Please renovate this building for the people who work here and the people who go here to conduct business. It's so rough, tattered, and could use some fresh air in there.
We had a relatively good experience at the Smithfield DMV. Took my daughter to get her learner's permit. After trying other DMV's unsuccessfully the day before we arrived just before 10 and were able to scan the QR code to check in. It didn't appear too busy & we were able to wait in the lobby.
The line moved slowly at first and then picked up a bit. At 11:15 a woman came out and announced it was lunch time and there would only be one person helping people for the next nearly three hours. She also pointed to a placard on the wall that stated the cut-off times for certain services: road test, written test, etc. which are all well before they close at 5 pm.
The line continued to move and we were finally called back. They started to turn people away around 1 pm because there were roughly 30 people in line - so if you're planning to walk-in keep this in mind.
The woman that waited on us was very polite and helpful. I asked her about the web site that you can check wait times on at the different locations. She said that site only shows the number of people that are checked in after 12 noon, so people who arrive before noon and check-in do not count towards those wait times & from my experience today (and yesterday) most people arrive before noon.
We were there nearly 5 hours, but my daughter got her permit, so it's worth it!
In the future, if possible we'll make an appointment.
Arrived at 1030a to 11 walk-in people already in line outside. They pulled all 14 in line inside for service tickets by 1130a and we were finally seen at 130p for my daughter's level 2 road test. Out by 140p. Very nice and informative staff, much better experience than the Wilson location the week prior. This location is not closing for lunch at this time and is taking lunch in shifts...this means things move a little slower around the lunch hour. Road tests stop by 350p so if you aren't pulled back by then, you're informed to return another day.
