Awesome box cool coaches
I've been to a couple CF gyms. The community the coaches have fostered at this gym stands head and shoulders above my previous experiences. Personally, it's this aspect that has pushed me to consistently come in and continue without giving up. The accountability of having a community behind you makes it no longer feel like a chore to get yourself in everyday.
Great crossfit facility with nice equipment and welcoming environment. Coach Derrick and Jason are very knowledgeable and helpful for crossfitter of any level.
This box is close to the parkway greentree exit and it has onsite parking.
So I've been a CrossFitter for a little over a year going 5 days per week. I've been to numerous boxes and trained under a handful of coaches. Prior to starting CF, I followed various weightlifting routines and then get bored or didn't see the progress I wanted to. Then, I started gaining weight (I was used to being ~160 and scrawny and I hit ~215 at my peak) and neglecting to condition myself resulting in fatigue during the day. So I figured CF would be a good compromise between my weightlifting and overall fitness goals. I've been with CF446 since its inception and don't plan to leave anytime soon.
The facilities: CF446 is in a modest-sized corner in the back of the gym next to a boxing group and turf soccer field. It's enough area to handle all of the classes, though if you come in the evening you might be a little crowded or have to share equipment. It's certainly not as small as some of the garage boxes I've worked out in, and there's plenty of overhead clearance for wallballs and suspended ropes and rings. The Greentree Sportsplex has a lot of other facilities outside of CF446, though (2 soccer fields, a weight room, a fight club, and a volleyball/basketball court), and those are always being used at night, so parking can be a nightmare.
The equipment: I think nearly every box struggles to find the perfect medium here. For example, too many bikes and you look like a spin class. Too few and WODs have to be on a rotation or staggered (not that that's bad) or altered to not use them at all. I think CF446 hits the happy medium. It's rare that you'll be standing around for a piece of equipment during a WOD (whether that's a testament to the amount of equipment or Derrick's programming prowess is yours to decide). The variety of equipment is good. You won't find a huge variety of obscure pieces of equipment like medicine balls, sand bags, or jump ropes that match your height/weight preference, but the necessities like barbells, wall balls, dumb bells, kettlebells, rowers, bikes, rings, and rigs/racks are in abundance.
The Coaching: In short, Derrick is phenomenal. The way I've seen CF sessions done at the boxes I've been to is one of two ways: WOD or Weights+WOD. The latter was how this box used to do things before Derrick. And while I'm not one to shy away from overstating my love for weightlifting, it restricted warmup time and fatigued me prior to the WOD. Derrick instead has us do an extended warmup (15-20mins), skill practice tailored to the WOD (ie if pullups are in the WOD, he'll have us practice an aspect, progression, or actual pullups) (10-15mins), the WOD(10-20mins), and then sometimes a recovery session with bands, foam rollers, lacrosse balls, or something similar (5-10mins). The WODs themselves vary, and he makes a noticeable effort to hit aerobic, anaerobic, strength and metcon work each week without overtraining any specific aspect. We could do a benchmark WOD one day, low-rep squats the next, and a 5k run the next. It never feels like we're doing the same thing week in and week out, but you see the same movements frequently enough to train them and feel like you're progressing.
Derrick is also an incredibly accommodating coach. No matter your weight or size, he is knowledgeable enough of movement progressions and how to modify them to suit your abilities. We frequently will work on gymnastics skills, and he takes the time to demonstrate each part of a progression before letting us tackle them. He knows his athletes well enough to assess whether a movement or weight is too easy for them or too difficult/would compromise form.
Cherry on top, the dude's got a great personality. I don't think a single person who has come to CF446 would disagree. He brings all new members into the fold and makes them feel like part of the family. He doesn't play favorites with any of the Crosfitters, either, which I've run into as a drop-in sometimes. He's genuinely friendly and ambitious when it comes to planning for the box's future.
Crossfit 446 is a good box to make your new home.
