My career as a caregiver started in August of 2000. Over the years I have experienced various work environments and fellow caregivers. I have found the best way to see if I want to work somewhere is to see how happy the other employees are. Some places have caught on to this concept creating policy for its workers where they are always smiling and helpful. Those smiles fade as soon as doors shut and corners are turned. In the summer of 2014 A Way to Stay appeared to begin one on one care for a dying resident. The A Way To Stay employees caught my eye and sparked my curiosity. They were like the light of crystal reflecting the sun in an otherwise dark room. No matter when and who I encountered they always seemed happy. Not a fake, plastic smile but a smile that came from inside. Their smile was brightest when giving care. No one cut corners or looked for a way around their work. It wasn’t about doing their time and going home. These caregivers truly cared. As time went on I found myself going to the room of this resident just to be around them.
Many places are quick to say how much they care. Yet so few do. They are as rare as a unicorn. After a lot of consideration, I searched A Way To Stay online and found the link to complete the application. As caregivers we don’t just do our job, we give our heart. If I was going to commit my heart to somewhere again I better make sure they were worthy of that, so I was honest. I was met with the understanding only fellow seasoned caregivers would have. This was the longest and best interview of my career.
I started as a caregiver with A Way to Stay in March of 2015. After three years doing caregiving I can confidently say I made the right decision. There is no greater gift than that of caring for someone in need of help.
As caregivers our diversity is our strength and is valued here. I personally enjoy working with older adults dealing with Dementia and late stages of life. Over the years I have seen many people go through the changes of Dementia and others leave this world. Now what makes us different here is we build relationships with our clients. On one case my client was no longer able to communicate their needs to us. Yet something was wrong. They were behaving differently. As I said earlier when a caregiver goes to work they go with their heart in hand. Seeing this status change I called the office. I remember packing an overnight bag for them, fighting tears in my eyes said “you are going to be okay.” They looked back, smiled and said “yes I am. Now give me a hug so I can go.” Calmly and quickly medical help arrived and my client was off to be checked out. I called the office back to let them know the outcome. I reverberated my report while trying to stuff down the tears. Devon cut me off and said “All of that is great. Now how are you?” Because when a caregiver provides care, we care. This is understood here.
A caregiver with my heart and skill can provide care anywhere but why A Way To Stay? This is a place to grow. It is impossible to avoid the inspiration and motivation contained here. Mention an interest in learning and you are discussing your purpose. Say you need to change your availability to be home with your children more and new options are given to you. Experience a crisis in your personal life and there is a warm cup of tea waiting for you with a listening ear attached. Even better are when we make mistakes. We are met with the same listening ear and a chance to change. This is my first time working in home care. As I meet other home care workers I encounter the usual mistreatment we endure. Caregivers amazed to hear if my shift is cancelled in a certain time frame I am still paid. Going between cases I am paid. Shocked faces when Dana and Devon visit and I know who they are. Yes, there are employees who don’t even know who runs the place where they work. I always joke and say known them, I know their dogs. When we smile at A Way To Stay we smile we smile from the inside out.

I have been with A WAY TO STAY for 6 years and that says a lot. Working with Dana and Devon I was shown that you can have a sense of family in your workplace too. I feel valued and have grown since my time here. I have been working as a caregiver for almost 15 years and have been in many kinds of healthcare environments.
The ladies take into consideration every caregivers' assets and knowledge and use that to find us jobs that match our skill set. I have worked in plenty of places where I have felt like I didn't have voice. Or that I had to just do something asinine because management said so, when I knew that management's suggestion wasn't effective.
After two years of working with Dana & Devon, I was promoted to recruiter and care manager for A WAY TO STAY; they saw my work ethic, reliability, and value. They helped me to grow and see within myself the qualities that I possess and helped me to understand I am more precious than gold. Dana & Devon would do that for any caregiver working for them who wants to grow and feel valued.
I know some people just want to do care and then go home; but others who take direction well and want to grow their talents, Dana and Devon will help them build their leadership and management skills. I know if these ladies could more, they would.

When my family couldn't provide enough help to my mom to keep her safe at home, we hired A Way to Stay. My husband and I work and are active with family and church. For many years our children, my husband and I would pop in to check on my elderly mom who lives near us. We'd do shopping, get her to appointments, clean, and do whatever else she needed. We honored my 80+ year old mother's desire to be independent and remain in the home where she raised us. Initially it was okay but three years ago mom started calling more frequently and seemed confused when she called. She wasn't eating and bathing as much and becoming more and more agitated. We saw bruises on her hands, legs and face and knew she was falling but not telling us. She didn't break anything so we let it go although her doctor pointed out the bruises and asked what happened. Mom never had a good answer.

Something had to be done so every evening I'd come over after work and made sure mom had a shower and clothes picked out for the next day. I didn't know anyone I could trust to help with my mom so found a company that would do a few hours in the morning and evening. Different people came on each visit and sometimes no one at all. We couldn't depend on such erratic care.

When I found A Way to Stay, we didn't know what kind of care would work for mom. Devon suggested live-in care and I'd never thought we needed someone to live with my mom and I didn't know if my mom would be open to the idea. I told mom that in order to stay home she needed to have someone live with her... the first month was rocky with Mom being so confused and she was a little nasty to the caregiver at times. But after that it worked out. Jessica was a great match for my mom. She was gentle, kind, and patient with Mom's outbursts. Jessica tells my mom jokes or funny stories to relax her, and somehow gets her to bathe and eat. Jessica got Mom to trust her and sometimes when I came over and try to help, Mom tells me she didn't want my help, she wanted Jessica.

My whole family loves A Way to Stay and Jessica. I don't worry about whether or not Mom is being taken care of or if a caregiver is going to show up or not. A Way to Stay and their team make my life and Mom's better.

    Dear Devon and Dana,

The letter has been a long time coming — life was very chaotic and sad after my mother's death.

It was wonderful having your team in my family's life - you were such a help with my mom. She'd always been very independent and remained in her home after my father died many years ago. Two years ago her health took a steep down turn and the family wanted her to leave her house and move into Pennswood. That move didn't materialize so we decided to have someone living with her at home.

You wonderful ladies helped us find the perfect someone in June. Mother felt like she was in charge while June made sure that she remained safe, healthy and happy. June filled us in daily on how mom was. When the end came near you were able to work with the hospice company and our family to be sure Mother was comfortable and we knew what was happening. You smoothly arranged for additional help when June could no longer handle mom's increased needs.

June was wonderful and I know that another family will be lucky enough to have her and your team as part of their loved one's life. A Way to Stay made all the difference for my family during a very difficult time in our lives.

    Yours truly,

    Sandy W
