“My life changed in 2012 when I found Dr. Zahl. My treatments were different than the prior pain specialists I've seen in the past. I will start out by stating that my pain improved and without pain medication. Opioides were making my pain worse. I was weened off of oxycontin, oxycodone which were all legally prescribed by a previous pain specialist. I wasn't addicted to pain meds, however, a physical dependence occurs. I couldn't walk more than half a block and now I can hike over 6 miles. Little by little Dr. Zahl was giving me back my life. As a patient, you seriously have to be compliant and listen because Dr. Zahl is seriously telling you the truth. You won't want to hear that your pain medication will be lowered but Dr. Zahl will ween you off gradually and with treatments that are effective. That's the difference as other pain specialists do not want to heal you because many are greedy and want to collect off of workers compensation. My diagnoses will never be completely healed such as scoliosis and degenerative disc disease and nerve damage. However, the goal for me was to live an optimal functioning life where I could participate instead of watching life go by. I lost over 50 pounds as well because pain meds will slow one's metabolism. Opioides were not meant to be prescribed for years. I guarantee my diagnoses are probably worse than 85% of all patients who are seen by pain specialists. Most of these pain specialists treat their patients as another number and literally the procedures are formed in an assembly line formation. One patient in for injections and 15 minutes later they are out. Dr. Zahl reviewed flouroscopic images from a previous pain specialist which revealed that the needle placement barely missed the spinal cord. The other needle placements which weren't life threatening, however, were not even close to the targeted area. I was receiving high amounts of steroids and radiation for treatments that did not work and actually there were some which caused nerve damage. Dr. Zahl will spend time listening to the patient as well. Most of these other pain specialists won't even see patients during an office visit as they hire physician assistants who are not physicians but act like they are but in reality only have a masters degree in science. As a RN with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, I know this is only two more years of education than I have which basically can be completed online. I had trigger points administered in my back by a physician assistant. PA may allow this but I was not too enthusiastic to say the least. Having a medical background and graduating from a prestigious university I expect the best. Dr. Zahl is the best. I have nothing to gain by this review and probably will be late for my appointment but I feel compelled to help others. I do not usually give great reviews but at this time and after six years I feel it's safe to do so with this pain specialist. Dr. Zahl is highly intelligent and graduated by a prestigious medical college in NY. That in it's self is impressive besides his background as an anesthesiologist at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. This is the best hospital in PA and their university is ranked the same as MIT for the top 10 colleges in the USA.”
